What is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin disease that most commonly occurs on the face, neck, neckline, shoulders, and back.

They can manifest as blackheads – comedones or red and yellowish pimples – papulopustular form of acne.

How does acne form?

Acne is caused by excess amounts of sebum and peeling skin syndrome when the sebaceous glands become enlarged and form plugs – blackheads, which grow and close output channels, develop and cause pimples.

Then the bacteria can settle in that place, causing inflammation, redness, and pus.

Who has acne?

About 80% of the world’s population between the age of 15 and 25 has acne, frequently occurring in adolescents around the age of 11 and lasting throughout the teenage years in 90% of cases.

About 3% of people over 40 still have a problem with acne.

Also, acne can be extremely painful.

Acne, in addition to physical, can lead to psychological consequences, especially during adolescence, as they can cause low self-esteem.

Traditional acne treatment

Traditional acne treatment is a very slow and time-consuming process that can last for 1 year when it comes to more severe forms. During the treatment period, the skin should be treated with antibacterial agents (soaps, lotions, and creams) and topical antibiotics, sometimes with oral use of antibiotics. In severe forms, hormone therapy is used as well (women).

Different traditional acne treatments

The most commonly used acne treatments are:

  • dermabrasion (removing the outermost layer of the skin, either mechanically or chemically – salicylic or glycolic acid)
  • antibacterial agents containing benzoyl peroxide
  • topical antibiotics applied to acne-affected skin
  • oral antibiotic
  • hormonal disbalance treatment (e.g. birth control pills)
  • phototherapy
  • photodynamic therapy
  • wild hazelnut products

However, traditional acne treatment has many limitations – it’s time-consuming and there are side effects:

  • skin irritation (burning sensation and skin peeling)
  • dryness of mouth, nose, skin, and eyes
  • photosensitivity of the skin
  • diarrhea, colon irritation
