MOLES - TRUTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT MOLE REMOVAL

Moles are benign growths on the skin that occur throughout life. It is generally accepted idea that it is dangerous to remove moles. This is not true! Every mole can be removed without any health risk. It is even recommended as soon as possible to remove moles which show any changes – redness, itching, twinge in the area of moles or if they are injured.

Moles are skin lesions, and in most cases they represent a group of pigment cells. Moles can occur throughout life anywhere on the skin – on the face, neck, arms, legs, body and head. People over the age of 30 that don’t have between 10 and 40 moles are very rare. Moles color ranges from light to dark brown, and they, as time goes on, can change their shape and color or even size.

Removal of moles, especially of those which show some changes, is advisable because it prevents the development of malignant melanoma.

Number of moles throughout life depends on genetic predisposition,  how often are you exposed to the sun or UV light, as well as how many times skin have been burned. Most often, moles are harmless, but malignant alteration of moles can occur.

Which moles should be removed?

Removing moles is desirable:
  • when they are in places exposed to irritation,
  • when they have changed shape or form,
  • if they have changed color,
  • if they are injured,
  • if they have an irregular shape – jagged edges and hyperpigmentation (with diameter more then 6 millimeters),
  • if they are inherited and bigger than 1.5 centimeters,
  • if they are bleeding, tingling, causing pain or itching.

How does the process of removing moles at the DIVA Clinic looks like and which method to choose?

At the Diva Clinic, during clinical examination, a diagnosis is set, and if necessary, dermoscopic examination of the mole is performed. Dermoscopy is a diagnostic method for moles and skin growths that is painless and non-invasive.

Based on this, the “Diva” Clinic’s team of experts decide whether intervention should be done, and whether the mole removal technique should be radio wave surgery or conventional surgery using local anesthesia.

Dysplastic nevi, congenital nevi and all suspicious changes are being removed ONLY with conventional surgical method, while all other growths on the skin can be removed with the radiowave surgery.

Based on the examination, the expert team of the “Diva” Clinic makes a decision whether the mole should be removed and whether the removal of the mole will be performed by radio-wave technique or with conventional surgical method using local anesthesia.

When mole is removed (regardless of technique), it MUST be sent to histopathological examination in order to keep the health and safety of the patient.

Who removes the moles at the “Diva” Clinic?

At the “Diva” Clinic, both of the moles removal procedures are performed by experts in plastic surgery and dermatology with more than 25 years of experience.

Removal of moles with radio wave surgery

The radio wave technique is a very sophisticated dermatosurgical technique that allows all benign moles (up to 6 millimeters) to be removed from the skin.

In addition, radio wave surgery is optimally method for the removal of wartskeratosessebaceous cystsxanthelasmas and other benign skin changes, both for its precision and  imperceptible scarring after intervention.

Removal of moles with radio waves is:
  • comfortable for the patient,
  • without stitches,
  • quick,
  • comfortable for the patient,
  • with almost imperceptible scars.

And that’s why it’s a common choice for removing skin growths.

Which moles can be removed by radio waves?

Radio wave removal of moles is used when:
  • they are at the site of constant irritation,
  • removal of moles is for aesthetic reasons,
  • they have regular shape, not larger than 6 millimeters (if clinical and dermoscopic examination concludes that the mole is adequate for radio wave technique).

And how long does the removal of moles by radio waves take?

The procedure of removing moles by radio waves takes only 20 to 40 seconds.

Surgical mole removal

When the moles are removed by surgery, it is done under local anesthesia. The patient feels mild discomfort at the location where the mole was, but it lasts only during the day when the intervention was carried out.

Depending on the location where the procedure was carried out, it depends how long it takes for the removal of stitches. This may range from 10 to 14 days (depending of the mole’s location).

Which moles need to be removed surgically?

Surgical removal of moles is performed when the moles are risky:

  • if it is a congenital nevi – because they carry up to 15% higher risk of becoming malignant,
  • if they are on the site of frequent irritation or for aesthetic reasons, and are larger than 6 millimeters,
  • if they show some change which puts them on a precancerous condition.

And how long does mole removal surgery last?

The procedure for removing moles by surgical technique takes up to 15-20 minutes.

What is the histopathological analysis and why is it important?

In the process of histopathological analysis mole that was removed is viewed under a microscope to determine whether it contains cancer cells.

And remember, it is desirable to check moles at specialized clinic at least once a year! This way, it can be diagnosed on time if a malignant change occurs.

NOTE:

Whether radio-waves are an adequate method for moles removal will be assessed by a specialist doctor during a free consultation.

The results of the procedure may differ from patient to patient, and this is influenced by factors such as skin type, i.e. whether it is prone to scar tissue formation.
